With the end of Quarter 3 comes the transition from summertime back into the school year. While students have access to breakfast and lunch through their school, some still struggle with food insecurities when they return home. In West Michigan, one organization is working to end food insecurity for children in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, and Allegan counties. Their core belief is that food is a right, not a privilege. Kids Food Basket is able to reach these 34,260 food insecure children with their Sack Supper program providing them with access to fruits, vegetables, protein, and a healthy snack to take home after school. They also provide community driven farming, family food provision, and educational programming.
So far this year, KFB has not had to buy any produce thanks to their farms in Holland and Grand Rapids. They have even grown enough produce to send out to the communities they serve and to sell at farmers markets. A few V-Team volunteers were able to venture out to the Grand Rapids farm and get a little dirty in order to lend a hand. The team was able to assist on the farm by digging for some of the biggest potatoes they have ever seen. Jeralee, one of our V-team volunteers says,
